Suits for men:

9 tips for the right suit

Upgrade Your Suit

Finding the right suit can be a challenge for many. Whether it’s for formal and corporate events or casual and private events, it’s always important that you feel comfortable. In our Suit Guide, we’ve put together a few tips so that you can find the suit that’s just right for you.

1. Jacket – what’s the best fit for me?

A well-fitting jacket should be close-fitting without being restrictive. When trying it on, it’s therefore important that it does not crease on your shoulders and that the collar does not stick out. Make sure that the buttons on the jacket are easy to open and that about 1 cm of your shirt shows below your jacket cuff. Pro tip: If you can fit two fingers between your chest and jacket, then you have found the perfect fit for you.

2. Suit trousers – what’s the best fit for me?

Your suit trousers should neither be too tight nor too loose and slip down. In a Slim Fit, they are cut slightly narrower and have a modern, sporty look. With a straight leg and comfortable fit, trousers in a Regular Fit are timeless classics that suit every figure type. Pro tip: Relaxed and Comfort Fit have a loose fit on the waistband with a wide leg: for that extra-casual air.

3. Double-breasted or single-breasted?

A suit with two button plackets is particularly suitable for more formal and corporate occasions. It looks stylish, sophisticated and radiates elegance and tradition. A single-breasted jacket gives your outfit a modern touch. They are simple, understated and also suitable for everyday wear. Paired with jeans or chinos, you can also wear them to private events when you want to be less dressy. Pro tip: Do the top button up and leave the bottom one unbuttoned – this accentuates your waist and gives you a balanced silhouette.

4. The perfect shirt

A shirt should match the jacket, lie under the lapel and not slip. A slightly longer back hem also ensures that it stays tucked in. A classic white shirt is an all-rounder that definitely belongs in your wardrobe. Shirts in other colours should go with your suit. If you’re unsure about the hue, it’s best to stick to classic black, white, navy blue and grey. Pro tip: Make sure when choosing the fabric that you won’t get too hot, shirts in breathable materials such as cotton and linen are great for summer.

5. Waistcoat or no waistcoat?

A three piece suit with a tailored jacket, suit trousers and waistcoat makes a statement. For formal occasions like weddings, gala events or corporate events, a suit with a matching waistcoat will demonstrate your sense of style. It instantly gives your looks a touch of exclusivity. If you choose to wear one, it should lie flat, reach your belt and not stick out. Pro tip: The last button stays unbuttoned – meaning you have more freedom of movement and stay comfortable.

6. Ties: classic & elegant

You’ll be perfectly styled with a tie at official events. For a modern touch, we opt for narrow designs. Go for styles in black, dark blue and grey. Minimalist all-over prints are allowed. Make sure that your tie does not go past the waistband of your suit trousers. A shirt with a Kent collar skilfully draws attention to your tie and guarantees a clean look. Pro tip: Matching the material of your tie to your tailored jacket completes your style.

7. Bow ties: young & dynamic

A bow tie can be less formal than a tie. It looks less stiff and is therefore more suitable for everyday wear. A bow tie is the right choice for smart casual or business casual looks in a professional context or for private events such as summer weddings or visits to the opera. Something else to bear in mind: choosing one in a high-quality fabric means it lasts longer and looks more elegant. Pro tip: A distinctive pattern that picks up the colours in your suit creates an effective highlight. Worn with a white shirt, it gives your look a certain sophistication.

8. The perfect colour choice

It’s best to look for a suit in a colour you like. Our general rule is this: the occasion determines the styling. In summer we prefer light tones, from pale grey to pastel green – everything goes. So you’ll be able to keep a cool head when temperatures rise. For formal occasions, make it easy for yourself with a classic suit in black or navy blue. A white shirt and colourful accessories add highlights. Pro tip: You’ll look especially sophisticated and smart in a monochrome look, for example with a dark blue shirt and suit in the same colour.

9. The right add-on: Accessories with style

Demonstrate your sense of style with colour-coordinated belt and shoes. A black leather belt is a true all-rounder – it works well with shoes in any colour tone. If you opt for jewellery, go for a coordinated look. Silver works perfectly with suits in cool colours such as blue, grey or green and looks fresh. Gold-coloured accessories give your look warmth and go well with colour tones such as red, orange and brown. Pro tip: Colour-coordinating socks can contribute to a rounded overall look.
